New York Fashion Week – Fashion Designer Profile: Ralph Lauren
I can’t look at Fashion Week without highlighting one of my personal all-time faves — Ralph Lauren. This year his showcase for the Spring 2008 Ready-to-Wear Collection was nothing less than spectacular. So much so that even his designer peers — Vera Wang and Donna Karan — were all noted as joking that after THAT show, they were afraid to showcase their own designs. Yes, Ralph Lauren is a tough act to follow, and given that this is his 40th year in the biz, it is not surprising. He celebrated this anniversary with a black-tie after-party at the Central Park Conservatory on Saturday night which was attended by the likes of Robert de Niro, Dustin Hoffan, Diane Sawyer, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
For this collection, Ralph drew on everything he has ever loved touching on his many known signatures — haberdashery, equestrian themes, and Anglophelia. The show began with this black and white ruffled-hem gown that
was cut higher in the front to showcase fishnets and paired with a hat out of My Fair Lady. Following this we saw a re-proportioned houndstooth jacket which is reminiscent of his Blue Label menswear inspired collection and was paired with a waistcoat and full-legged pants.
The rest of his 72 pieces contained brightly colored and floral print evening wear with equestrian wear that was just as vibrant in big bold colors. After these showcases, he sent a set of taffeta dresses out in a series of bold primary colors that stood out amongst the crowd, as would any wearer of these designs. Gorgeous! Love ‘em all, but I just adore the pink ruched number. Click on the picture to see it larger.
Ralph Lauren closed his show with a standing ovation and Frank Sinatra’s “The Best is Yet to Come” and from Ralph, this is the least surprising of all.
