We are going to continue looking at Nina Garcia’s The Little Black Book of Style
.
We discussed how Nina talks about investing in the”bones” for your wardrobe throughout the book, and yesterday we covered some quintessentials – The Little Black Dress, The Cashmere Sweater, The Trench Coat. All pieces that are timeless and will take your fashion dollar as far as you want it to go. What are we looking at today? Well, today is Sunday and I am sure most of you are dressing down. So that’s what we will take from Nina’s book today — denim, and the classic white shirt. Two fail-safe pieces that you can dress up or down, heels and bangles make these items classic for an evening out, or flats and a scarf make them stunning for dress down day at work. What does Nina have to say about them?

Nina says the classic white shirt is as key to the North American woman’s wardrobe as blue jeans.
“It’s chic and simple, practical and unpretentious. It can be paired with jeans (Jackie O in Hyannis), black pants (Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction), a long skirt (Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday), or a gown (Sharon Stone on the red carpet). It is also useful for covering up a bad outfit when entertaining in a good hotel (Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman).

Denim is the biggest staple in any woman’s wardrobe. Nina says
“There is something about jeans that gives a girl an aura of instant style. They are simple and practical, sexy and perfect, rebellious and elegant. They are the most versatile, perfect item. The most alluring part about denim is that it can dress anything down and make even the most uptight items look relaxed.”

are styled in a way that will last for years. The denim has been pretreated so they are soft before you have to wash them 100 times, and these already look like your favorite pair. They feel like it too. You can’t go wrong with the straight leg, no matter what generation you come from. I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes. ~Yves Saint Laurent
