Fashion Designer Profile – Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel Showcases Pre-Fall Ready-To-Wear

Chrissie | Celebrities, Chanel, Fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford | Tuesday, 18 December 2007

seanpic.jpgHere you are seeing Sean Lennon performing for London’s latest major event. Just last week, Karl Lagerfeld whooped it up as only he could do by bringing the Chanel label’s pre-fall ready-to-wear collection to London. The collection was called “Metiers d’Art” and was held at Phillips de Pury and Co. headquarters. The show was slipped in between a celebrity studded dinner, with an after-party equally as glitzy. Chanel embossed black taxis were seen sporting guests in the likes of Kate Moss, Tom Ford, Sean Lennon, Lily Allen, and Naomi Campbell. Sean Lennon was responsible for the runway soundtrack (gotta get my hands on that!) and the line was highlighted with a mix of punk, tweed, leather, with the odd ruffle. And for a bit of Chanel trivia, the Chanel madam herself, Coco Chanel was known to have a lover in London. He was the Duke of Westminster, who supposedly engraved the city’s lamp-posts with interlocking C’s to prove his love for her. Does that symbol sound familiar?

karlandtom1.jpgPictured here is Tom Ford (former Gucci Director, now on his own label) with Karl Lagerfeld (right). Let’s have a taste of Karl’s latest, shall we?

karla.jpgPictured here is a classic example of what was referred to as ‘the odd ruffle’. Karl’s collection for Fall was a mix of dark tones in grays and blacks sometimes on their own, sometimes complementing each other. Here is a flouncy bubble skirt with a thin-ribbon sashed hemline enhanced with a little ruffle flounce in a gorgeous organza. I am LOVING the sashed waist as well, and the playful little flouncy sleeves.

karlb.jpgHere we have a gorgeous long coat that I have a hunch is becoming Karl’s signature. I’ve seen this length coming in a few collections in a row now. This wool blend coat is accented with teensy streamlined ruffles that give what would be a simple and basic piece just enough hootzpah. Toss in a feathery furry scarved neckline, and this basic black coat is transformed into something elegant, AND sassy.

karlc.jpgAh! Again we have the long coat, this one at floor-length. Karl worked magic on this herringbone adding that flouncy ruffle along the hemline, neckline, and cuffs. Adding ruffles to a herringbone fabric, an otherwise masculine look, gives this long coat enough feminine touches to make a bold statement. This coat says, do NOT mess with me in a very elegant way.

karld.jpgMy last favorite set in this collection is this sassy little ensemble Karl created for evening. This set is for the woman who can’t be bothered with skirts and dresses at cocktail hour. Here you are looking at a beautifully beaded halter top, paired with sateen skinny pants and a dark sateen blazer. Very chic! Here’s another where the statement is clear – I wear the pants here, boys!

Daily Fashion Tip – Excerpts From Nina Garcia’s “The Little Black Book of Style” PART ONE

Want some fashion advice? Get it from the best – Nina Garcia the Queen of Fashion over at Elle Magazine. Today and over the next few days I am going to give you some excerpts from Nina Garcia’s The Little Black Book of Style. I have talked about this book before over here, when it was first released, but now that it’s been out for a bit, it’s worth a deeper look. For the cost of lunch, you can pick this book up and have at your fingertips Elle Magazine’s primo fashion genius, uh director, gives you some quintessential tips on how to dress with decorum, and even more importantly, how to make your fashion dollar go from season to season. You will find in her inspiration from the greats in the fashion industry, as well as everything you need to know on the must-haves, and how to wear them.

Nina talks about investing in the bones for your wardrobe throughout the book, and those bones are what we are going to be covering.

“The bones of your wardrobe are those essential staples that go with almost everything, never go out of style, and are enduringly chic. They are meant to be the black canvas onto which you can add layers….these staples transcend time, trends, and travel. They can go from day to night, season to season, and they can still be worn five years from now.”

    What are they? Let’s have a look…

The Little Black Dress. Capital L, Capital B, Capital D.

This is the ultimate blank canvas…mysterious, chic, understated, and provocative…it will flatter you, but it will not detract from the rest of you. It lets your hair, accessories, and your personality take center stage. And the slimming effect – let’s not forget the slimming effect.

This Diane von Furstenberg Bateau neck wrap dress is a classic example. For $300, your fashion dollar can stretch for years to come. Throw a cardigan or cropped jacket on this for day, and hang that sweater up for evening. Perfect! One is never over or underdressed with a little black dress – Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel, Creative Director)
    The Cashmere Sweater.

“In all kinds of weather, and for any kind of occasion, throwing on cashmere makes you feel instantly luxe. A cashmere cardigan is perfect over anything – a dress, T-shirt, button down shirt – but also incredibly sexy when worn alone. A cashmere turtleneck is perfect when paired with just about everything – jeans, trousers, and skirts.”

This Michael Kors Cashmere turtleneck sweater is again, also a very solid investment. I do not believe in God. I believe in cashmere. ~Fran Lebowitz (Author)

    The Trench Coat.

“A classic trench can work in any kind of weather and goes well with almost anything (or almost nothing if you are feeling very film noir). But the best part of the trench coat is that it makes you instantly mysterious. Wear it with big sunglasses if you want to really channel your inner detective, spy, or fugitive”.

Looking for a trench coat that will take you from year to year? Again, stretch that fashion dollar with this Burberry Prorsum Double-breasted trench coat. I personally prefer the black, again, it goes back to the slimming effect and again, this cut is very flattering and can go from year to year. Put on a trench; you’re suddenly Audrey Hepburn walking along the Seine. ~Michael Kors

Fashion Designer Profile — The House of Chanel, Oh How You’ve Grown!

admin | Celebrities, Chanel, Designer Profiles, Fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, Red Carpet | Tuesday, 07 August 2007

chanellogo The wealth challenged buy Chanel whenever and wherever they can at the most affordable price. Those otherwise financially inclined will visit the House of Chanel. This House was founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, AKA Coco. The logo that is iconic to the Chanel name is quite possibly the most recognized status symbol in not only the fashion world, but in Western culture all together. The logo is that of the overlapping double C to signify Coco Chanel’s brand. The House of Chanel began with a small boutique that was originally centered around the sale of women’s hats but as its client base grew, so do its popularity. It did not take long for the House of Chanel to move to the most fashionable district in France — Rue Cambon. Coco and her Parisian fashion house were now out to conquer the world. What started as humble beginnings for women’s hats, is now a logo seen on everything from earrings, to purses, handbags, perfume, and any other item deserving of the Chanel brand.

marylyn nicole2 1921 marked the birth year of Chanel No.5. aptly named after a gift received from Queen Coco. She had been given a set of 5 fragrance samples and preferred the fifth sample. It was the fragrance that actually launched her clothing label as the socialites and blue hairs of both London and Paris grabbed onto this scent quicker than you could say spritz me. The fragrance has seen spokeswomen from yesteryears Marilyn Monroe to todays Nicole Kidman as the face for this timeless scent.

audrey As the House of Chanel rose in popularity, Chanel became responsible for many major changes in the fashion world and revolutionized the meaning of haute couture. In 1926 the little black dress became a wardrobe staple, and remains so today. Her short black cocktail piece was designed to match any woman’s figure and to minimize stains. Adding Audrey Hepburn to the face of Chanel did wonders for not only the little black dress, but for the House of Chanel as the standard to beat in women’s fashion. Every woman wanted to be Audrey, and every woman wanted to wear Chanel.

suit suit2 The Chanel suit was the next timeless piece in the House and even first editions still hang in closets today. Originally this suit started off as a knee length skirt, jacket that was boxy and traditional wool was the fabric of choice. The suit was often seen with large buttons, wide trim, and large pearl necklaces. As you can see, the look has not changed much over the years and this classic suit is still found in any of Chanel’s houses globally.

victoria In 1971, on January 10, the world said goodbye to the woman that ran the house and Karl Lagerfeld became the new Artistic Director for Chanel. He has since reinvented the brand and reinstated the Chanel label to its status of iconic fashion. All of her looks have been updated to match the sex appeal of today’s woman. Here is a transformation of the Chanel suit as seen on Victoria Beckham.

The House of Chanel also has a friend in Oscar and Emmy. And here are some of Chanel’s, and Lagerfeld’s, most triumphant memories sur la red carpet over the years.

    Kodak Theater Nicole Kidman
The 74th Annual Academy Awards, March 24, 2002
For the 2002 Oscars, Nicole chose a spaghetti-strapped pale pink chiffon dress from Chanel’s haute couture line. The gown was a true Oscar fashion moment and led to the statuesque star signing on as the spokesperson for the fashion house’s signature scent the illustrious Chanel No. 5. The star epitomized the standard of elegance valued so highly by this brand.

The Shrine Theater Sarah Jessica Parker
    55th Annual Emmy Awards, September 21, 2003
In 2003, Sarah Jessica Parker was at the height of her success with Sex and the City. She was also fast becoming an international fashion icon. When it was time to dazzle at the Emmys, Sarah Jessica Parker decided on a ballerina pink full-length Chanel haute couture gown. She kept it simple with the accessories, opting for a Lana Marks alligator clutch.

    The Shrine Auditorium Jennifer Aniston
    56th Annual Emmy Awards, September 19, 2004

During happier times with Brad, Jennifer Aniston arrived to the 2004 Emmys with tousled hair, chandelier earrings and an elegant strapless Grecian goddess gown by Chanel haute couture. The curve hugging gown sparkled with gold beadwork around the bodice and throughout the short train.
