Fashion Designer Profile: Donna Karan, DKNY

Chrissie | Designer Profiles, DKNY, Fashion, Donna Karan, Anne Klein | Friday, 08 February 2008

    donna_karan.jpg

Donna Karan was born in Forest Hills, New York on October 9, 1948. She was born as Donna Ivy Faske. It was in 1974 where she married Mark Karan, and subsequently divorced in 1978. In 1983, she married Steven Weiss and lost him in 2001. Donna has in total, 3 children who have blessed her with 6 grandchildren.

Donna started her career being schooled in the famous Parsons School of Design. In 1974 she began her work as many designers do, under the schooling of another designer. For Donna, it was Anne Klein who broke her into the biz. During her time at Anne Klein, Donna became the originator of the notion of “bridge” dressing – Lower priced than designer, Higher pricing than moderate. In 1984 Donna launched her own label with her late husband, Steven Weiss. 1989 was the birthday of DKNY.

During her career, Donna has won 3 Coty’s, and was honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards for three consecutive years – 1985, 1986, and 1987. She was also honored as Menswear Designer of the Year in 1992. Finally, the CFDA awarded her with Lifetime Achievement Excellence in 2004, but that has not kept Donna from the sewing machine and pattern makers.

Donna’s trademark is the 7 interchangeable black pieces that wrap and sculpt the body, and it is this trademark that has won her accolades in her field. Though Donna resigned as the CEO of DKNY in 1997, she still maintains the title of chief designer of DKNY.

New York Fashion Week Fall Winter ‘08 – Donna Karan, DKNY

Chrissie | Fashion Shows, Fashion Week, DKNY, Fashion, Runway, Fashion Events | Friday, 08 February 2008

Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul. — Donna Karan

The theme surrounding Donna Karan’s FW ’08 Collection this week was termed ‘Eclectic Glamor’. Donna never fails to please, and her Fall Collection this year was a little bit of everything.

Fabrics came in every sensation imaginable – tweed, brocade, jacquard, printed silk, corduroy, and a handful of knits. Colors ranged from muted heather grays to rich fall tones. The color line was extended into the cocktail dress wear, where we saw some bright colored and patterned pieces and a lot of bold, strong reds.

Trends most prevalent were a flashback to the ‘60’s with a contemporary twist. We saw a lot of baby-doll silhouettes and bohemian glamour. Peasant dresses were also very popular in Donna’s line with the addition of a few pieces that could be mixed and matched. These included numbers like the Boucle bomber, and a wide selection of chunky sweaters. Donna also offered some contemporary looks on the mini-trench, which I really liked. Personal fave here would be the black patent mini-trench.

The entire collection was a mix of energy and freshness. A lot of pretty, with a little touch of funky. Eclectic Glamor.

Cheap Fashion and Beauty Finds – MORE Holiday and BLACK FRIDAY Deals!!

bf1.jpgToday is the day where most North Americans start seriously thinking about their holiday shopping. And why is that? Because it’s Black Friday, when retailers all across America expect to rake in so many sales their figures to ‘to the black’ so to speak. But it is not just the brick and mortar stores that are doing this, online retailers are taking as much advantage of this day as many others, in fact, you will see sales extending way beyond Black Friday online, until what is now known as Cyber Monday, the Monday following Black Friday where online shopping hits a major peak. Here, I am going to give you as many deals and steals as I can find, so take advantage of them NOW before all the goods are scooped up. Even better, MOST of these retailers will take payment by PayPal now, so if you are not big on using credit cards this time of year, PayPal is a very secure method of payment. It’s the only way I shop!!

A LOT of Avon products are really making their mark this year, and you can see them featured on Oprah, in O! Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, and US Weekly among many more. Fragrances make a great gift for anyone that you just aren’t sure what to get, or you think they have everything. There is nothing more elegantly wrapped than a designer fragrance. One of my favorites is the one I have pictured here, Stella by Stella McCartney. It is described as a rose in bloom, and though I am not big on flowers, this one is VERY sexy, and VERY pretty and not remotely overpowering. Even better, this is an all day scent for me, I need only apply once. But if you aren’t a Stella girl (I’ll forgive you) you will not be hardpressed to find your fave designer fragrance at Fragrance.Net. Or, for that person on your list you just haven’t decided on yet, find out who their fave is. And why not? You can’t go wrong with the Low Prices, Free Shipping and Great Holiday Gifts at FragranceNet.com!.

That’s all I will leave you with for now, that should keep you busy. But should I come across any more great finds today, you have to know you’ll be the first to hear about it!!

Daily Fashion Tip: The Most Versatile Bra You Will Ever Own

admin | DKNY, Cheap Finds, Daily Fashion Tip, Fashion, Lingerie | Monday, 01 October 2007

straps_m_1.jpgPlease bear with me girls as I grapple with the ins and outs of HTML formatting! Anyway…on today’s tip. We have talked about this before, but this is one of those situations that bears repeating. What do you wear underneath all of those pretty fashions that you have invested so much time and money on? I have to say, anytime that you wear something that shows the world what you are wearing underneath, you are creating a major fashion DON’T. Girls, girls, this is just SO not pretty. Check here for a recap on some of those issues…..Suffice it to say, you do NOT want the world to see your pretty underthings until or unless the appropriate moment arises. The solution? A convertible bra.

For me, I love these so much that in fact, I ONLY purchase convertible bras at this point. I have yet to find a piece of clothing that can not be paired with a good quality convertible bra. Tank tops, camisoles, strapless pieces, halter styles – you name it, and a convertible bra will not only shape your figure appropriately, but also allow your garment the perfect fit so that it hangs on you beautifully. There is no point in wearing pretty things, if your pretty underthings are bunching or scrunching, or showing all over the place. THIS alone will ruin the overall look of any outfit. You also want to make sure you have the right SIZE bra. Doesn’t matter how convertible it is, if it doesn’t fit, your overall look will be wrong, wrong, wrong. If you aren’t sure how to size your bra,

    check here for a recap.

My favorite convertible bra? Well you know I love the designer labels, but when they come super cheap, even BETTER. I found this perfect Convertible Bra by DKNY at Bare Necessities. This DKNY Contours Front Close Convertible Brafeatures everything you need in a convertible bra. The only thing with this one is that it does not go strapless, but the contours on this piece make up for that. This bra is molded with shaped underwired cups, and the contour is so perfect that this bra will virtually disappear underneath anything you wear. No bulges, not even in your tightest T-shirt! The center has a very flattering plunge for even the lowest cut top, and this will convert to criss-cross, halter, or close-set straps in the back if you wear racer-back garments. This DKNY piece is on sale right now at Bare Necessities, so you can afford to pick it up in a few colors, making that lingerie go farther than ever. Click on the picture to purchase!

Now if you are looking for a good strapless bra Donna Karan Intimates Solutions Strapless Bra

For either of these DKNY pieces, just click on the picture to purchase and get all kinds of great deals or FREE shipping at Bare Necessities. You can’t miss these savings. Save up to 50% on select styles at BareNecessities.com. Shop Now!
